Wedding Flower Bouquets- Which Design is for you?

June 6th, 2010

Cascading Wedding Bouquet

Cascading Bouquet

(aka- Shower Bouquet) The most formal and sophisticated of all wedding bouquets. This bouquet can be made up of any kind of flower, although because of the level of formality usually associated with this type of wedding, roses are popular. The flowers are arranged in a large round grouping at the top, and taper gently to a point at the bottom.

Posy Wedding Flower Bouquet

Posy Bouquet

The Posy Bouquet is usually small and lightweight (it can be made lighter by having your florist replace the stems with floral wire). The stems are traditionally wrapped in ribbon or fabric, and may have rows of beading or pins decorating the stems.

Beautiful fall hand tied wedding bouquet

Hand-Tied Bouquet

(aka- Clutch Bouquet) This style of bouquet is a bit less formal, with the stems generally left long and covered with only a little bit of ribbon as a handle. Calla Lilies  and Queen Anne’s Lace generally look beautiful in this arrangement.

Ballerina Bouquet

Ballerina Bouquet

This type of wedding bouquet became popular during WWII. A few beautiful flowers are nestled in fluffy tulle or net, which can be a gorgeous yet cost-effective way to save money on your wedding flowers.

A royal scepter bouquet

Scepter Bouquet

This type of bouquet is pretty and unexpected. It can be carried by the bride or any other member of the wedding party. Any size ball of greenery and/or florals are left on extremely long stems which may be embellished with ribbons or pearls.

Pomander Wedding Bouquet

Pomander Bouquet

(aka- “Kissing Ball”) This is a ball of flowers suspended by a cord or ribbon. Some modern brides have begun to carry them, although they are mostly carried by flower girls and junior bridesmaids.

Crescent Bouquet of yellow lilies and green orchids

Crescent Bouquet

This is a simple yet sophisticated wedding bouquet style. It is shaped in a soft arch reminiscent of a crescent moon, and is usually made of orchids and other more exotic flowers. They can be made more cheaply in other flowers, like roses, but begin to look rather heavy and lose the delicateness of the arch like this.

Whatever style of wedding bouquet you choose, just be sure to make it your own! It is fun to come up with creative new takes on each of these bouquet ideas, perhaps mixing in different greenery or flowers, or combining shapes in new ways.

If you find a style of bouquet that appeals to you, simply type in the style name in Google Images, and you will find a countless number of inspiration photographs that can be sorted by color.  Send us pictures of what you choose!

Questions for Couples- A Fun Book for the Two of You

May 5th, 2010

Want to really get to know your significant other inside out?

You’ve probably seen those books at the bookstore about “The Story of Us,” etc. But the questions in this book are actually vital to the success of your future marriage. It is not only crucially important to know your partner well, but it is one of the most fun and fulfilling aspects of even being in a relationship to begin with. The website talks about a couple that has been married a long time that got the book, and would email a few of the questions and their answers back and forth every day, which helped them fall even deeper in love with each other. I think that’s a cute idea (I might even try it with my man!). Even if you don’t get the book, it may be fun to make a list of your own questions to compile into a journal or to play email tag with.  :-)

Check out the book here.

Wedding Scents- It Smells Like A Wedding In Here!

April 29th, 2010

Scents are one of the most powerful senses that humans experience, but I find that this sense is rarely even considered when designing and planning weddings. Since scents (wow… tongue twister there!) can trigger powerful memories and emotions, why not consider incorporating some into your ceremony and reception?

Ways to incorporate scents:

-Candles
-Oil Burners
-Wax/tart melts
-Wall plug-ins
-Chocolate fountains
-Incense
-Flowers

Be aware- scent can distract the sense of taste, so it is best not to have strong smells during your meals. Also, make sure you check with your venues to make sure you can burn candles.

Make Your Own Wedding Invitations

February 8th, 2010

There are obviously a million and one ways to make a wedding invitation. I thought it would be fun to post a lot of links to sites that have inspiration and instruction. This will be the first of many posts about DIY Wedding Invitations, I’m sure!

There are a few things to consider:

  • Be sure to shop around! You may end up buying your paper from a different place than you purchased your envelopes, which may be a different place than you purchased your embellishments. You may consider ordering samples from your various paper sources to make sure that your colors match.
  • If you are making your own invitations to save money, be careful! Once you add up all the costs (of the paper, printing, inks, embellishments, envelopes, envelope liners, and your time), DIY wedding invitations might not actually save you money, or it may just be worth the slight increase in cost to have someone else do it all for you. Sometimes, though, there is nothing like doing it yourself to ensure that you capture your vision perfectly, though.
  • Check out lots of invitation websites to get inspiration and perhaps turn you on to directions you would not have originally considered.
  • You may have to invest in a supplies to make your invitaions. My favorites are a bone folder <to make creases if you are doing a folded invitaion>, decorative paper punches <can be used to either punch fun shapes into your card, or to punch shapes out of other papers to then attach to your card>, a paper cutter <the slicer kind, not the guillotine kind> and, of course, great paper!
  • Here is another great tip: “Wedding Paper” costs a lot more than the same paper with a different label. Just make sure that your paper is at least 65lb. weight for the card base- any weight will do for embellishments on top of the base. Check out online paper stores and office supply stores to find pretty paper cheaper than “Invitation Paper” stores.
  • Sometimes it is actually cheaper to go down to your local copy or office supply store and have them do the printing part for you. Bring them your paper and your wording, and let them do the rest. Do the math first, and figure out how much your ink will cost you for your printer. If it is the same, or even a tiny bit more, consider letting someone professional deal with printing hassles.

So, without further ado, here are some fun sites that I found. Just click on the invitation picture to be taken to the website.

Butterfly Releases at Weddings

February 4th, 2010

This is such a beautiful way to end a summer wedding ceremony! It does get a bit pricy, though, so here are a few ideas on incorporating it into your ceremony for less:

  • 1 Butterfly- to represent the two of you becoming one and your life together taking flight- this can either be released by you and your honey, or by your officiant as part of an outdoor wedding ceremony
  • 2 Butterlies- one for each of you
  • 2 Butterflies- one for each set of parents to release
  • Butterflies for each member of the wedding party to release surrounding you
  • One butterfly per family to release together
  • A large box of 1-4 dozen butterflies that you and your special someone release together
  • One butterfly per guest (most expensive option)

One site I visited had a good idea for capturing pictures of a few of your butterflies-  they suggested placing a few of the boxes in the refrigerator for approximately 15 minutes. Then, you can gently place the butterfly on you, your flowers, or wherever else you like, and they will remain still for about 30 seconds before they take flight.

Butterfly wedding themes can be so pretty, too. Here are a few other butterfly ideas I like:

Elopement- Fun, Unique, and Creative Ideas

February 3rd, 2010

So, if you are going to elope, it might as well be creative, right? It would be sad to just go down to the courthouse and call it a day… so with that in mind, here is a list of fun, creative elopement ideas that I have come up with (remember, elopements can include close friends and family members, or they could be just the two of you):

Hot Air Balloon Wedding- Start your life together up in the clouds. Get married at sunrise or sunset on a hot air balloon.

Rooftop Wedding- Find the tallest or most unique building in town, and get married overlooking your city (or, what if you got married on your own roof top?).

Picnic Wedding- Hike up to a beautiful, secluded location, tie the knot, and then, after your officiant and witness leave, spend the rest of the afternoon together, alone in paradise.

Movie Wedding- Now, this could take a few of your friends to pull off, or, perhaps your wedding planner or officiant knows some people who would play along, but what if you created a movie out of your wedding? You could write a script (or, if you are both good at ad-libbing, at least set a scene), and it could culminate with you getting married at some random spot in town. Your on-camera adventure could take you on a journey all over town, and could involve all sorts of fun scenarios. Plus, with this elopement idea, you would have a film that you could show your friends and family later (and it would be fun to watch on your anniversary- after you filmed your anniversary movie, that is!).

Mystery Party Wedding- Host a Mystery Party, where everyone dresses in character and have a set storyline with the surprise ending- your wedding!

Make-Out Spot Wedding- Why not hold your wedding in the car at your favorite make out spot?

Cruise Ship Elopement- What if you just jump on to a website like Travelocity.com and book a cruise or similar trip last minute? You could go anywhere- the idea is to really go wild and choose a place that would give you wonderful memories of your special day. And, last minute travel can save you lots of money over a typical destination wedding.

Sky Diving or Hang Gliding Wedding- Just make sure you don’t write long vows, of you might not have time to say them all. And don’t give up on finding an officiant- if no one in your area is willing to perform the ceremony for you, why not ask an adventurous friend to get ordained and marry you? It is quite simple to get ordained at no charge online- just make sure to call your county and ask what the requirements are to be able to perform a wedding. It’s usually pretty simple.

U.S. Virgin Islands- The best part about the Virgin Islands? You can get married there without a passport and not have to worry about any crazy rules and regulations that you may run into trying to get married on a cruise ship or in a foreign country.

Hawaii- Another obvious island choice- there are many great packages for getting married on a beach that start at under $300.

Big City Elopements- NYC, Chicago, San Francisco… or any other large city. Get married downtown or at one of the famous landmarks- send postcards back as wedding announcements!

National Park Elopements- The opposite of the above idea- Get married in some of the most beautiful parts of the country.

Railroad Wedding- Get married on an antique steam engine.

Vegas- There is always Vegas! And, since it is the Elopement Capitol of the World, there are many options, ranging from the drive through marriage to the ubiquitous Elvis wedding.

Whatever you decide, just make sure that you know the counties rules about the number of witnesses and the credentials of the officiant. Perhaps your officiant and a photographer will be enough witnesses. Enjoy your time together, and make your elopement something the two of you will reminisce about for the rest of your lives.
